What Is It?

Naturopathic Doctors are primary care practitioners who identify and treat a wide array of
health conditions in patients of any age, using natural therapies. Naturopathic medicine can
benefit most health conditions by incorporating the use of dietary supplements, herbal remedies,
lifestyle counseling, clinical nutrition, acupuncture and more. Your naturopathic doctor will
use a combination of these therapies in order to customize a treatment plan to fit your needs.
Naturopathic doctors work alongside medical doctors, chiropractors, physiotherapists and other
healthcare practitioners to ensure that you get the best possible health outcomes.

What to expect from your visit

Your first visit will be one hour in order to gather a detailed medical history and perform a
focused physical exam. During this initial consultation your naturopathic doctor will collect all
the information required to make an assessment of your case. Laboratory tests will be used when
needed to assist in making an assessment and diagnosis. Patients are encouraged to bring any
recent lab work to their naturopathic visit. Naturopathic Physicians are trained in running lab
tests, however this expense is not covered under OHIP and private labs are used when needed.
Your N.D will work with your M.D to consider lab tests that may be particularly useful from a
naturopathic perspective which may not have been run by your M.D. Follow up visits will be 30
minutes or as long as needed to ensure your health is improving as expected and to allow for any
adjustments needed in the treatment plan.

About Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic Doctors are highly educated primary care providers who integrate standard medical diagnostics with a broad range of natural therapies. NDs practice a comprehensive approach to treating illnesses and promoting health. They work in partnership with other regulated health care providers to ensure that patients receive the most comprehensive and effective care possible.

Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct system of primary care that addresses the root cause of illness or disease and promotes health and healing using natural therapies. NDs support and stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself, focusing on prevention and using natural substances and treatments. The primary goal of naturopathic treatment is to address the cause of illnesses, rather than simply treating or suppressing symptoms. In other words, NDs concern themselves with the “why” as well as with the “what” of an illness or disease.
